  • Senior Academy: 18-25 years old (as on first day of program).

  • Intermediate Academy: 13-17 years old (as on first day of program).

  • For information about the Junior Academy (6-12 years old), please click here.

  • Accepted Instruments: Piano, violin, viola, cello.

Work: One Work of Own choice

Time Limit: 10 minutes

First Prize: $500 AUD and Certificate;

Second Prize: $250 AUD and Certificate;

Third Prize: $125 AUD and Certificate

The best candidates from the competitions will also be invited to perform in the Gala Concert on the evening of 5 August.

INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS

  • All participants will need to prepare two works (one for masterclass and one for competition).  The time limit for each work will be as follows: Senior Academy - 10 minutes; Intermediate Academy - 7 minutes.

  • All participants except for piano students must bring their own instruments.

  • Students who are travelling from overseas (i.e. not normally residing in Australia) must email proof of their travel insurance to contact@iamusica.org prior to the commencement of the festival.  We regret that we cannot accept students without proof of travel insurance purchase.

INCLUSIONS​

  • Classes and competition as outlined above.

  • Chinese interpreter for all classes.

  • Performance in a masterclass for all students.

  • Accompanist for strings students in competition and concert.

  • Certificate of participation issued by the International Academy of Musical Arts.

  • Chartered bus transport to gala concert.

  • 8 nights twin-share 3-star hotel accommodation.

  • Breakfast on all days (except on day of arrival).

  • Lunch on all study days.

  • 5 days local public transport card for travel from hotel to study venue.

  • Transport, guide, admissions, lunch, and dinner for Phillip Island and Yarra Valley tours.

EXCLUSIONS​

  • Airfare, surcharges, and taxes.

  • Instrument transport costs on flight.

  • Travel insurance (all students must have travel insurance to participate in the festival).

  • Visa-related costs.

  • Airport transfers.

  • All other meals not already listed.

  • Other miscellaneous costs such as laundry, internet, tips etc..

ACCOMMODATION

  • Participants will be hosted at a Melbourne CBD hotel in a twin-share arrangement with another participant of the same gender.

  • Check in: Wednesday 31 July 2019

  • Check out: Thursday 8 August 2019

  • Daily breakfast is included in the stay from 1 to 8 August 2019.

HOW TO APPLY

All international applicants will need to participate in a preliminary round competition or submit an audition video if no preliminary competition is held in their region. For more information, please email contact@iamusica.org and let us know which country you are based in.

2019 MELBOURNE INTERNATIONAL
PIANO & STRINGS FESTIVAL

The Melbourne International Piano and Strings Festival is one of Australia’s most prestigious classical music festivals.  Every year, the festival attracts the world’s most talented young musicians and features a stellar teaching faculty from among Australia’s greatest artists.   

Over an intensive week, students will attend a variety of masterclasses, workshops, and seminars, and experience the thrill of performing on the Australian stage.  In 2019, we are also excited to introduce the inaugural Melbourne International Piano and Strings Festival Competition – an additional platform for participants to showcase their artistic mastery and flair. 

For our international visitors, the festival also offers a chance to explore Melbourne – the world’s most livable city.   Renowned for its vibrant artistic culture and stunning natural surrounds, there will be ample time for participants to experience the unique Australian landscape and enchanting wildlife.
